MOMBASA, KENYA: The dispute between Chief Justice Willy Mutunga and the Law Society of Kenya (Mombasa branch) escalated after he threatened to expose LSK officials behind a petition to oust him.
But the Mombasa law society accused Mutunga of turning a professional matter into a personal feud in order to divert attention from accusations against him.
Mutunga for the first time came out to defend himself from accusations leveled against him by LSK Mombasa chapter accusing him of marginalising Coast region in the appointment of judges and magistrates.
He said the lawyers were peddling lies and that he had opted not to answer them "because I would have said the truth about Mr. Nyongesa."
Erick Nyongesa is the chairman of Mombasa LSK branch and he has spearheaded a signature campaign to oust the CJ through a petition in the National Assembly. On Tuesday he said the petition is ready to be forward to the National Assembly.
Nyongesa said CJ was trying to divert attention from substantive issues raised by lawyers and members of the public about handling of the judiciary and revealed that the petition seeking to oust him and the disbandment of the Judicial Service Commission was ready and will be submitted to the National Assembly's Committee on Legal Affairs and Administration of Justice next week.
He revealed that LSK has already collected 780 signatures from lawyers and members of the public to support the petition and the petition had already been drafted.
