Police nab bhang grower in Nairobi

A man was Sunday arrested after canabis sativa (bhang) plants were found in a piece of land that he lives on.

The man lives in Valley Arcade, Nairobi, on a fenced-off piece of land estimated to be one acre.

Dagoretti Divisional Criminal Investigation Officer (DCIO) Joseph Ondoro who confirmed the arrest said the suspect is a caretaker on the land and has been growing bhang alongside his maize crop for the last three years.

"The Muthangari police station duty officer stumbled onto this plantation when another man went to report that the suspect had refused to surrender some metals he had left for safe keeping. When the duty officer got here, he realised there were bhang plants in between the maize stems," the DCIO explained.

Mr Ondoro said they found more than 300 stems of mature bhang and other smaller stems that had started to grow.

"The street value of what we have uncovered here today is about Sh1.5 million. We have arrested the suspect pending prosecution," Ondoro said.

The suspect told police he did not sell the bhang but used it himself, saying it gave him energy to farm. His employer of Asian descent knew nothing about the crop.
