Kenya Police still lead ABA League standings

Nairobi,Kenya:Despite having been defeated by Kenya Prisons in the last two legs of the National Boxing League, defending champions Kenya Police are still leading the table standings with 86 points.

Prisons who won the third leg in Nyeri last month and the fourth one in Machakos last week are behind the policemen with 75 points.

The policemen who have won the league title for a record of six consecutive times must win the fifth and last leg of the league set for Madison Square Garden in Nakuru in October in order to retain the Yamashita Trophy.

In Machakos, the warders scored 23 points against policemen’s 15 followed by Kenya Defence Forces(KDF) ten, Kenyatta National Hospital five, Coast and Nakuru tied on four, Nairobi Metropolitan three, Nakuru two and Central one point.

Following Kenya Police and Kenya Prisons in the overall league standings are Kenya Defence Forces with 59 points, Coast Combined 33, Nyanza Combined 17, Nakuru ABC 16 while Nairobi Metropolitan and Kenyatta National Hospital(KNH) tie on ten points, Administration Police has five and Central three points.

Police coach George ‘Foreman’ Onyango assured that he would retain the title in the long run.

He said in Machakos, his players were affected by cuts received as a result of the new rule by the International Amateur of Boxing Association(AIBA) of boxing without headgears. 

 “My boxers received deep cuts owing to the new rule but the title is still within our reach,” he said.

A total of twenty five boxers got cuts in Machakos.

During the event, Kenya Prisons landed eight players in the finals against the policemen six.

The eight were Harrison Mathuku in the flyweight, Erick Ndung’u in the light flyweight, Evans Thiong’o in the bantamweight, Joseph Njogu in the lightweight, Dennis Okoth in the light welterweight, Rayton Okwiri in the welterweight, Aziz Ali in the light heavyweight and Daniel Shitsia in the heavyweight.

During the matches, Mathuku(Harrison) beat Issa Mwangi of Nairobi Metropolitan, Ndung’u(Erick) lost to Olympian Peter Mungai of Kenya Police, Thiong’o(Evans) lost to Ethan Maina of Kenyatta National Hospital, Njogu(Joseph) defeated Joseph Shigali of Kenya Police, Okoth(Dennis) walloped Ben Omondi of Coast Combined, Okwiri(Rayton) beat Niven Okumu of Police, Ali(Aziz) overcome Elly Ajowi of Kenya Police and Shitsia(Daniel) lost to Charles Okoth of Kenya Police.

In other matches, experienced Nick Abaka of KDF got a cut against upcoming Anthony Otieno of Nyanza Combined forcing the referee to stop the contest of the middleweight bout in the second round.

In the super heavyweight, Peter Opudi of Police overwhelmed Michael Okwisia of KDF on points.
