Former Liverpool star Gary McAllister was left needing hospital treatment after an unprovoked street attack in Leeds, according to reports.

Scotland international McAllister was beaten up while waiting for a taxi in Leeds city centre in the early hours of Sunday morning, The Sun says.

He was allegedly punched in the face before wife Hayley, who had been out for a meal with her husband, tried to pull his attacker off him.

Police reportedly took the ex-Leeds midfielder to hospital where he remained from 3 am until midday.

The attack is said to have left his face in "a mess" and he was left needing "10 to 12 stitches" in his top lip.

The Sun reports McAllister refused to comment in detail when asked about the alleged incident but did say: "It's in the hands of the police".

“Gary is extremely shaken up," a source is said to have told the paper.

"It was totally unprovoked by just one bloke — it’s crazy. It beggars belief.

“Nothing like this has ever happened to him — it’s a real shame.”

McAllister had spent Saturday at Anfield watching on as a Liverpool legends side took on AC Milan.

His wife apparently suffered injuries to her wrists in the struggle to restrain his attacker, the paper adds.

He is now said to be recovering at his home in Tadcaster, West Yorkshire.

McAllister is currently working as Steven Gerrard's assistant at Rangers and the Blues boss was in action at Anfield on Saturday.

The 54-year-old won 57 caps for Scotland and has managed Coventry and Leeds.

As a player, he won the league title with Leeds in 1992 as well as the FA Cup, League Cup and UEFA Cup at Liverpool in 2001.

The alleged attack comes just two weeks after Aston Villa's Jack Grealish was struck by a Birmingham fan during the Second City derby at St Andrew's.

Paul Mitchell, 27, was jailed for 14 weeks for the assault.
