Go artsy with mosaic

Your Home

Mosaic is a piece of art that uses assemblage of small pieces of coloured glass, stones, tiles or other materials to create a decorative accessory or to use on flooring and walls.

Anciently used in Roman and Greek architecture, mosaic was commonly used to adorn churches, temples and palaces.

Mosaic can be used to bring forth an artsy texturised ambience to accent walls, bathrooms and backsplashes. Accessories such as mirrors and photo frames are a low commitment way to add mosaics to your decor as they are easily portable should you move houses.

If working on mosaic art for a wall – it helps to sketch the outline of your image first onto the wall. The small pieces of tiles, glass or stones can be spread on a sheet to enable picking of the right colour piece.

Final mosaic work can appear visually busy so you may want to focus attention on a vertical or horizontal strip and then have the adjacent wall colours in plain colours to enable the mosaic piece to get the full focus.

For bathroom areas, mosaic tiles are readily available for floors and walls and help add warmth to otherwise sterile-looking bathroom furniture. Ensure floor tiles are non-slip to prevent accidents and falls when tiles are wet.

If doing the mosaic artwork yourself be careful that bathroom floor mosaics do not have protruding edges that could cause stabbing and hurting of bare feet. Ready made mosaic floor tiles are available for interior and exterior floors that will turn each of your step to a piece of art.

Mosaic artwork is also a great way to revamp old furniture pieces like the top of an old coffee table, chest of drawers or jewellery box. Create an exciting pattern on it and turn your furniture into a piece of texturised mosaic visual art.
