Maybe men have got something right after all - shaving could 'reduce wrinkles' according to experts

Could this simple act be the secret to anti-ageing?

It seems like every week there's a new cosmetics advert selling the "secrets of anti-ageing", but according to some skin experts it isn't a secret at all.

Men could have unwittingly been unlocking the "secret" for years now, and the best part is that it barely costs anything.

We're talking about... shaving. Every time a man takes a shave, not only does he end up getting rid of his stubble but he also effectively ex-foliates by getting rid of the top layer of skin on his face.

Dr Michael Prager, of the Prager Beauty Clinic in London, is an expert in treating the signs of ageing, and told MailOnline: "From an anti-ageing point of view, home shaving has some effect.

"It’s like a mild form of microdermabrasion, so encourages collagen production, which reduces wrinkles. Whenever there’s trauma to the skin, collagen is stimulated to help cell renewal."

What about the hair growing back thicker?

If you already shave your legs, maybe you should start shaving your face too

Many women are told to avoid shaving their legs and go for the option of waxing so that the hair doesn't grow back thicker.

So does shaving one's face really result in the hair growing back thicker than before? Apparently not!

"The notion that shaving influences regrowth is wrong," Dr Prager says.

"Cutting off hair above the root won’t cause any feedback to the follicle, which is the live part that produces the hair and sits below the skin."

Which razor should you use?

You can use a disposable razor, or you can use an electronic one, but many women choose to use the scalpel shape mini-razors with a single blade, due to ease of use.
