While most of us like the idea of retail therapy, trying clothes on can be difficult.

And even when we could try clothes on before we buy, it's not always the most pleasant experience.

And jeans can be by far the most challenging item of clothing to stock up on.

If they fit your legs, the chances are they won't fit your waist and vice versa, which means it's almost impossible to get away with buying them before trying them on.

But not anymore as one woman claims she's found a foolproof way to test whether a pair of jeans will fit you without having to head to the changing room.

Billie Newland said you can easily figure out whether a pair of jeans fit by holding them up to your forearm.

She said: "Choose a pair of jeans and stick your arm inside the waistband. If there's a large gap between your elbow, your hand and the end of your jeans then they're too big.

"On the flip side, if your [forearm] doesn't fit inside the waistband then they're too small."

And added: "But if you find a pair of jeans where your elbow and your arm fit completely snug that's your perfect pair."

In another video Billie also explains that you can also find the length of your jeans by measuring them against your arm once again - but not in the same way.

She said: "Grab a pair of jeans and stretch them across your wingspan" - directly out to the side.

"If you stretch them out and they go past your fingertips then then it's gonna be too long.

"If you pick up a pair and [have to bend your elbow] then they're too short."

So the jeans to look out for are the ones that allow you to extend your arm straight out comfortably.

Her video received nearly 270,000 likes and hundreds of comments from people praising her time-saving idea.

One person said: "Nice tip. Thank you!"

Another also suggested: "Also if the waist wraps around your neck it's perfect too."

A third admitted: "I use this hack all the time."

But not everyone is convinced.

One person asked: "But what if you have a tummy?"

Another added: "What about those XXXL people... that's not true. Only way is to try them on."

A third said: "My body is too disproportionate for this."

And: "What if I eat a hamburger right before I was going to shop?"

Have you ever cried on public transport?
