Embattled Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza has denied claims of nepotism and corruption in running the county government.

Ms Mwangaza has instead turned the heat on Members of County Assembly (MCAs), accusing them of witch-hunt, blackmail and hatching a plan to oust her from office by sponsoring an impeachment motion.

"The witch hunt is being perpetuated maliciously by people who want to distract service delivery to the people of Meru County," she said.

"The unverified allegations against me are being used to perpetuate impeachment proceedings which have already been tabled in the Country Assembly," she added.

The governor made the claims in response to an inquiry by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) over allegations of engaging in conflict of interest, failure to protect public resources and nepotism in appointing county officials.

In the response filed through lawyer Danstan Omari, the governor denied the allegations, claiming cartels who are not happy with her bid to block corruption avenues are out to cripple her administration.

According to the governor, the impeachment was being sponsored by some MCAs to force her to give them ward development funds, when the law does not provide for such a fund.
