I am still KUSO boss, says defiant Manyara

Kenya University Students Association president Antony Manyara has said he's still the organisation's leader.

He has dismissed a faction that two weeks ago claimed to have removed him from office.

Speaking to the Nairobian at a Nairobi hotel, Manyara, who was with officials Daniel Moruri and Marco Laboso, said he was duly elected. He said anyone purporting to have removed him from office is violating the Kuso constitution.

"I am serving my fifth term. Our constitution is clear that Kuso elections are held on the first Thursday of every April each year. Currently, there is neither a notice nor motion of removal of the Kuso president or any other official by any council member or student leader from any university in Kenya," Manyara said.

He added that his team will not be distracted and that its resolve is to serve students in all public and private universities, including other institutions affiliated with Kuso.

A group of students, led by Sarun Jessie, a first-year Bachelor of Commerce student at the University of Nairobi, said they could not be led by a former student.

However, Manyara said although he left university in 2016, he enrolled again and is currently a student.

But Jessie said he wouldn't give Manyara the position.

Manyara, a student at the University of Nairobi's Parklands campus, claimed that throughout his tenure, he worked to raise the minimum HELB loan amounts for TVET institutions from Sh25,000 to Sh40,000 and for public and private universities from Sh32,000 to Sh38,000.

The Kuso boss stated that 1,644 university students benefited from scholarships both locally and abroad during his leadership.

"My office has also assisted other students in obtaining employment, internships, and attachments. We engaged students in election awareness and poll observation activities for various parties and candidates of their choosing during the election season through the Inua Comrade programme."

Manyara encouraged the new administration to establish a directorate in the Ministry of Education that will handle university students' concerns.

He said they planned to ask the incoming administration to change the current policy of sending HELB funds to colleges in the form of tuition fees.
