Being single can be difficult, when life is normal. Add the stress of a global pandemic and the fact that we have to practice social distancing and it gets even harder.
I remember when I became single after a five-year relationship. The first year was difficult. Getting over an old flame, one I had such hopes for, was a nightmare.
Once I had sufficiently moaned the relationship, I decided that it was time to rebuild my life sans partner. I embraced singlehood and finally got my groove back. It was easy then, I could go out whenever I wanted, visit friends, work on my hustle, visit family, etc.
But now, with the lockdown, when movement is limited, I have realised how difficult it is to be truly alone because that’s what happens when you’re single. You’re alone.
So how do you cope?
1. Don’t be so hard on yourself
Times are hard as it is, even for people in relationships. Take it one day at a time. Work, because we all have to do some work every day. Clean your home and cook your meals.
If you’re unable to do anything more than work, say a side hustle, that’s okay too.
Focus on living one day at a time. Take a break when you need to.
2. Reach out to your single friends
You probably have at least one single friend and they need to be checked on now more than ever. Call them up and find out how they’re doing. Most likely they’re facing similar challenges like you are and they need just as much support.
Have a video call, regular phone call or chat and talk about the difficulties you’re facing and how you’re coping. You might be able to give each other some useful tips.
3. Accept everything that comes with being single
One of the best lessons I learned when I became single is that you should allow yourself to feel all the emotions that come with being single. Celebrate your newfound freedom, cry for the love you lost and embrace the loneliness. It’s okay to feel all these emotions.
4. Have a date night with yourself
Just because you can’t go out right now doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy this time alone. Have a pamper night where you do your nails, take a hot bath or give yourself a facial. Cook yourself a sumptuous meal. Dress up in your fancy lingerie and nicest dress not to impress anyone but for yourself. Put on your favourite show or movie and laugh out loud or read that book you’ve been planning to for ages.
How long since you travelled to shags to see your parents?
