A woman plunged five floors from a rooftop while posing for a selfie, according to reports in the US.

Reilly Hamilton, 22, was in a critical condition after the fall in Manhattan, New York, and required surgery.

Stunned neighbours said she was lucky to be alive after the shocking incident, which happened at around 8pm on Saturday.

Dayo Adebanjo, 22, told the New York Daily News: "I kind of thought that someone fell but I was like, 'No way'.

"Then there was a brief period of silence when the girls were running down."

Another neighbour, aged 24, told the New York Post: “She was taking pictures, and she fell, and apparently she hit the AC unit and landed in the trash area, which is like, horrendous."

Another said Reilly was "screaming", and added: "She's lucky to be alive."

On Sunday she underwent surgery at Bellevue Hospital.

According to reports she suffered a fractured pelvis, broken ankle and broken right arm, but is in a stable condition.

It is thought a party had been going on all weekend when Reilly's fall happened.

The 24-year-old neighbour said pals of the injured woman were distraught.

She added: "It was just a bunch of girls in the room — all were crying — and a bunch of cops."
