Manchester United facing defensive crisis after Louis van Gaal falls out with Marcos Rojo

Living

Fuming Louis van Gaal is facing a defensive crisis after what appears another fall out with Marcos Rojo.

But the Argentina defender insisted on Tuesday evening he will not leave Old Trafford, despite his fractured relationship with the manager.

The Manchester United defender was banished to the wilderness at the start of the season after failing to turn up for the final leg of the club’s summer tour, because he forgot to get his passport visa renewed.

Yet after forcing his way back into the starting line up following injury to Luke Shaw, the Argentine defender is now sidelined again... after failing to tell the United bench he was injured at Southampton last Sunday.

A clearly unimpressed Van Gaal revealed he now has a major defensive headache with Shaw out, Phil Jones not ready to start and Paddy McNair also injured at the weekend.

It means Uruguayan Guillermo Varela may make his debut two years after joining United.

Asked if Rojo was injured at the weekend, he replied tersely: “Yes, I thought we were right on time for Rojo because we changed him in the game and he didn’t warn us that he was injured, he has a hamstring injury and Paddy McNair has a minor injury.

“Luke Shaw is of course not available. It’s not so nice that we have three defenders injured – but I can line up 11 players so that is not the problem.”

That means Jones will return after thrombosis, but his manager warned: “I have to admit that because of the injury of three defenders, I shall have him on the bench but he is not fit, maybe he can play 30 minutes, he is a lucky boy that I don’t have other substitutes.”

Rojo looks to have again inspired the United manager’s ire, but even though he has been strongly linked with a move to Napoli after tasting Van Gaal’s wrath, the player’s agent insisted yesterday he is going nowhere.

Speaking to Radio Kiss Kiss Napoli, the Argentina international’s agent Carlos Goncalves said:

“There is no need to talk about it. The player is happy at United and has no intention of leaving the club.”

Van Gaal revealed he may introduce a young player against Ipswich in the Capital One Cup tonight, with midfielder Sean Goss and right back Guillermo Varela likely to figure.
