Benefits of body brushing

Living

Most of us have never considered body brushing as part of a beauty routine. We usually tend to the skin on our face through regular cleansing, scrubs and facials. But when was the last time you tended to the rest of your body. The simple act of brushing your skin with a natural bristle brush for just a few minutes per day has benefits that go way beyond the surface.

These benefits include:

1. Exfoliates

Dry body brushing removes dead skin, which improves your appearance and clears clogged pores. As a result, the skin looks brighter, smooth and soft.

2. Increases circulation

It increases circulation which encourages the elimination of metabolic waste and toxins from the skin.

3. Reduces cellulite

It helps to soften hard fat deposits beneath the skin while distributing fat deposits more evenly. This helps to diminish the appearance of cellulite.

HOW TO DO IT

Get a good quality body brush — go for one with natural bristles, rather than synthetic, as this will be much gentler on your skin. There are lots of body brushes on the market that are made with vegetable fibres. For best results, dry skin brushing can be done daily.

Before you bathe, brush your entire body, starting with your feet and working upwards with large, upward stroking motions. Make sure both your skin and the brush bristles are dry, and always brush towards your heart, as this encourages lymph flow to the main ducts of the lymphatic system. Avoid brushing your face as well as any other sensitive or irritated areas. Use more pressure on the feet, legs, arms, and butt; and less pressure on the front and back of the torso. When you’re finished, your skin should not look red or feel irritated. You can brush for anywhere from two minutes to a half hour. Do what feels right for you. Follow each session with a shower or bath to rid the surface of your skin from any toxins that have been released.

The investment is small, just a few minutes of your day, but the reward is worth it. You can put on some soothing music while you do this, and it could turn out to be something you look forward to everyday.
