Incorparating tables runners as part of your decor

Living

Incorporating table runners into your home décor is a great way to personalize it. Table runners come in a variety of designs, patterns, fabrics and sizes. A new one can be expensive, but if you are creative and have a fundi, you can have them made.

There are people who prefer using table runners on the bare table to provide colour in the centre of their table. You can also place a table runner over a matching table cloth to add an extra layer. Runners add extra design to the table without overwhelming it. Some even have holiday themes, while others are suited to any season.

To get the perfect fit of a table runner, it would be preferable to have them made, even by yourself. The work does not require significant sewing talent. You only need a quick seam around the runner to finish the fabric edges. The advantage of making your own table runner is that you have a varied choice of fabric, patterns and designs to choose from. The other advantage of making them yourself is that they can always be perfectly sized for the tables on which they will be used.

Crocheted table runners are another alternative and can add an instant vintage look to your décor.

Here are a few tips on how to use table runners

On the table: This is rather obvious. Your high quality wooden dining table does not deserve to be entirely covered but it begs for some décor accent to it; so place a table runner on it. The runner creates visual interest without hiding the great woodwork. Make or buy a variety that you can change with the seasons and holidays. Runners also act as a protective barrier if you want to place a centerpiece on the table without worrying about scratches and damage.

Protecting furniture: Apart from the dining table, you can also use a table runner to decorate a coffee table, hallway table or dressing table. It protects the dressing table from damage from cosmetics, lotions or nail polish, among other chemicals.

Wall décor: If you have a beautiful table runner that doesn’t fit your dining room decorating style, you can creatively incorporate it into your décor by framing it. You can then hang it wherever it looks good in your living room. Hang it vertically or horizontally to fit your space.
