Nine foreign ambassadors and high commissioners were in Lamu at the weekend to show support for the conservation of the Swahili cultural heritage.

Led by French ambassador Elisabeth Barbier, the dignitaries joined the local community and other visitors in the three-day celebrations of the 9th Lamu Cultural Festival.

"We are pleased to be associated with conservation of Lamu’s cultural heritage," Ms Barbier said as she spoke on behalf of the dignitaries.

Among those present were Head of Delegation of the European Commission Eric van der Linden, Netherlands Ambassador Laetitia van den Assum, US ambassador Michael Ranneberger, Australian High Commissioner Lisa Filipetto, Polish ambassador Anna Grupinska, Brazilian ambassador Ana Maria Sampaio Fernandes and Moroccan ambassador Abdelila Bernryane. Moroccan Minister for Tourism Mohamed Boussaid was present too.

To welcome the dignitaries was Tourism Minister Najib Balala, who thanked them for their support in the past nine years.
