What is self-love journaling?

One practice that is recommended by therapists is to get into the habit of journaling. Before I became intentional about writing in my journal, I’d do it every once in a while but I can’t say that I was consistent about it. However, I knew the benefits of keeping a journal. I had noticed that writing down my fears, hopes and dreams as well as what had happened in my life, helped reduce my stress levels and helped me make decisions.

Even though there are numerous benefits of journaling, it can be a bit difficult to reap these benefits if you don’t know how to do it properly. This is where journaling prompts come in. Journaling prompts are simply a guide to help you learn things about yourself that you hadn’t thought of or had been suppressing.

As we’re all striving to grow in self-love, getting into the habit of checking in on yourself will help you see your self-deprecating tendencies and remedy them. You will also get a reminder of how awesome you are. In this way we will grow in self-esteem, and become happier.

Since it can be challenging to look at ourselves in a positive light, self-love journaling is a sure way to practice positive reflection. This will make you grow in self awareness, self love and self acceptance.

If you’re looking to start self-love journaling, here are some prompts to guide you.

1. Strengths

Make a note of your strengths and be as specific as possible. Write down examples of moments where you demonstrated strength.

2. Gratitude

The best way I have found to develop a positive attitude is to practice gratitude. Write down three things you are grateful for. These don’t have to be big events. It could be something as simple as a good night’s sleep, going for a walk or spending 10 minutes with your child. As you write what you are grateful for, include why.

3. Accomplishments

What have you accomplished  recently? Remember, this doesn’t have to be big. Note down how this win reflects on your character traits or positive quality that you possess.

4. Challenges

Getting to know and love yourself isn’t only about recognizing your accomplishments and strengths. It also includes recognizing areas of struggle and your insecurities and what you did to overcome them. Noting these down can also help you recognize your strengths and areas of your life where you should give yourself a pat on the back.

5. What makes you unique

This can be a difficult task to accomplish but it is so worth it. Reflect on what makes you you and give examples. Think of things you can do with your uniqueness.

Other things to include in your self-love journal are:

What makes you lovable

When you feel your best

What you love about your life

Things about your life you can change and where you can set boundaries

Your dreams
