Police in Kiminini, Trans Nzoia, are holding a 38-year-old man who allegedly defiled and killed her 8-year-old daughter.

The suspect, Emmanuel Juma, reportedly lured the daughter to accompany him to Kiminini river in Mbai village, where he sexually abused her before pushing her into the river.

The incident happened on Sunday evening.

The minor's mother was not aware that the husband had walked out of the house with the daughter. And when she realized the husband and child missing, she alerted her neighbours to help her trace the girl.

"After the minor's mother realized her child was missing, she alerted her neighbours who assisted to trace the minor. As they approached the river, they reportedly saw the man trying to strangle the girl before pushing her into the river," Kiminini OCPD James Onditi told the Standard.

Onditi said the suspect was arrested by members of the public as he fled the scene during the 8pm incident.

"He was trying to escape from the scene but members of the public give a chase and managed to apprehend him and escorted him to Matangale police station where he is being held," said the OCPD.

The body of the minor was retrieved from the river by residents and moved to the Kitale district mortuary.

The suspect is expected to be arraigned in court today (Tuesday).
