Eight myths about pregnancy debunked

Pregnancy

Pregnancy is probably one of the most exciting and scariest moments in a woman’s life. You’re so happy that you’re expecting a baby and everyone around you is congratulating you.

During this time, you come across so much information on the internet, advice from female relatives around you and there is always that unsolicited advice from the cashier at the supermarket advising you on the effects of coffee on pregnancy.

Everyone has something to say and at this point you’re bound to come across myths that will have you laughing so hard. Here’s what to expect.

1. You’re not supposed to shower often when you’re pregnant

This is untrue and it’s gross! You need to take a shower especially since you’re sweating more and its part of overall hygiene to shower every day. This keeps germs away which is important for both you and your baby. You have to make sure that the temperature of the water isn’t too high.

2. The shape of your belly is a sign of a boy or girl

Don’t get too excited when someone predicts the gender of your baby based on what your bump looks like. The shape of your belly has nothing to do with the gender of your child and there’s no credibility to that assumption. Some people even assume that if your bump is higher up, it’s a girl and when it’s lower, it’s a boy. Not true.

3. All pregnant women glow

During pregnancy there is usually an increase in circulation of hormones which gives the appearance of glowy skin. However, if you’re not glowing it doesn’t mean that something is wrong with you. It means that your body is reacting differently to the changes and that’s okay.

4. Looking at an ugly animal equals ugly baby

Wow, this one is seriously bizarre. Apparently if a pregnant lady looks at an ugly animal for too long, her baby will be ugly. This superstitious myth was probably common a long time ago but I’m sure some people still cover their eyes when they come across an animal that’s ‘ugly.’

5. Eating a lot of butter will ease delivery

Butter won’t lubricate the birth canal to make the baby slide out smoothly. Delivery just doesn’t work that way.

6. You need to double or triple your portion

You don’t need to serve two plates, one for you and one for the baby when you’re expectant. The baby only requires a few extra calories for them to be healthy and that doesn’t involve an extra plate of fries. This myth about eating for two, more so unhealthy foods, will lead to health problems like obesity. You’ll have a harder time shedding off the weight after delivery.

7. There’s a safe amount of alcohol you can drink

Drinking alcohol during a pregnancy is never a good idea. It increases the risk of developmental issues in your baby which is unfair for them. Someone might assume that they’re having a safe amount of liquor when in reality they’re consuming a dangerous amount.

Just avoid it while you’re pregnant.

Cocoa butter is your stretch mark prevention remedy. Cocoa butter has amazing benefits for your skin but unfortunately, preventing stretch marks isn’t one of them. Stretch marks happened because of the rapid weight gain or genetics. ?
