Following the safety directives that we avoid public gatherings at all costs, we have to take it upon ourselves to ensure that our children are also isolated. The most practical way of doing this is by having them in the house at all times.

However, bonding and spending time with children is a challenge most parents are grappling with. While most parents would take the #StayIndoors moment to choke their children with digital games, this is actually a good time to bond and forge a good relationship with your kids. The best ways to bond with your children are mostly out of the digital space and entails general activities that you can all take part in.

Here are some suggestions of activities you can involve your children in as you build a connection and also keep them engaged.

Plan chores together and involve them in house chores

Since your children can now have your undivided attention, you can take the moment to teach them a few things. A good place to start would be the planning and carrying out house chores. By involving the kids, right from the planning, they are able to learn the importance of being organized. Also, they get to learn the importance of unity and working together.

Cook together and have mini cooking lessons

Children are generally curious and they will take up any chance to learn something new. How about you find simple and easy recipes that you can prepare together? While going about the normal duties of the house like preparing dinner, take advantage of the moments to give them simple cooking lessons. By learning new things from you, they will develop, and improve themselves by taking up the culture of looking up to you as a mentor and role model.

Organize game nights, play board games

Playing is an integral part of the proper development of children. Since they cannot go out as much as they should anymore, you need to find ways of compensating for that. A shortcut would be to get them immersed in digital games, however, there is much more they can gain by taking part in physical games with their family members. Set time and play board games together, set a game night for the family. Give your children the platform to bond with you and every other member of the family outside the somewhat monotonous day-to-day relationships.

Set them up for debates, spelling contests

Since they have been learning a lot of interesting things in school, you can tap into what they have gained, from school, to keep them engaged, and be entertained while at it. How about you group them according to their intellectuality and set up for debates? Children enjoy ‘battling’ over ideas and this way they can really keep their brains busy, with the good things.

Karaoke nights

Then there is singing! Children adore singing and you can readily tap into that by planning karaoke nights. Depending on the size of your family, you can even make it a little competitive by letting them grade each other’s performance.

It is much easier to have the children engrossed in computers and phones. However, this denies them the critical family bonding. With everyone home, for an unknown period of time, take advantage of this and build the most productive relationships within your family.

Have you ever
