After reading all about self-love and why it’s important to love yourself, you’re probably asking yourself where to start. Since self-love is a lifestyle, it needs frequent practice so you can quickly identify and rectify negative self-love habits and also so that it can become part and parcel of your life.

Here are some tips that will help you master the art of self-love.

1. Avoid negative self-talk

When you are your worst critic, instead of being your loudest cheerleader, you fail to recognize your achievements. You lose your self-esteem and constantly doubt yourself. On the other hand, people who love themselves silence this negative inner voice and only entertain it when it is coupled with logical reasoning. This practice makes them more confident, aggressive in chasing their goals and enables them to express themselves more openly.

2. Take vacations

There are people who think that resting is the preserve of certain members of society. That cannot be further from the truth. People who practice self-love understand that all work and no play will make you a dull human being. They routinely set aside time to rest, unwind and reconnect with their inner selves.

3. Unplug from social media

Studies have shown that mindlessly scrolling through social media platforms can lead to depression. Depression is a subsidiary of a lack of self-love. People who practice self-love only use social media when it is beneficial to them. If they feel like it is giving them unnecessary pressure, they take a break from it. By reducing your use of social media and only limiting it to content that adds value to your life, you have will protect your wellbeing and avoid anything that makes you doubt yourself or compare your life to that of others.

4. Attend self-improvement forums

Just like you keep up with developments in your field of work, you also need to learn more about self-improvement. People who practice self-love are perpetually looking for ways to improve themselves. They do this through reading self-help books or articles online, they watch motivational videos and attend motivational talks. This helps add fuel to the fire of their self-confidence. Whereas some people have what seems like in-born confidence, most of us need to be reminded to love ourselves.

5. Have a healthy lifestyle

An important part of the life of a person who loves themselves is eating a healthy diet. They also make time to exercise. These habits have become so ingrained in them that they are a part of their lives. As a result, their bodies show the fruit of their labour and this further improves their self-esteem.

6. Stay away from toxic people and environments

We tend to entertain negative energy for various reasons. Sometimes it takes us long to recognize toxicity. Other times the toxic people and environments are our families and friends making it difficult to stay away from them. For the people who have taken a vow to love themselves toxicity is a no no, irrespective of where it is coming from.

You can definitely pick a thing or two from the practices of people who have already taken leaps in the self-love journey. Whereas you may be unable to master everything overnight, adapting one practice at a time will certainly get you there.
