Five foods that taste better grilled than fried

Cooking Tips

There's something about fried foods that we can't resist. Whether it's the fast results it produces or the taste with oil drippings, it's hard to keep our tongues off.

Grilling food however, may take longer than the usual frying, but has loads of benefits. If you’re wondering which foods you can grill instead of frying, try these ones for the ultimate foodgasm.

1. Cauliflower

These white heads which are in the same family as broccoli make not only great stew thickeners but are the perfect source of vitamin B. The cauliflower curds, which are the white part, can be used in pizzas, pasta, stir fries and many other foods. Pluck the cuds or cut them into easily edible sizes and spice them up. Toss them on the grill to char them for added flavour and colour. You may opt to blanch them prior to your grilling.

2. Donuts

We all know the traditional way of cooking donuts, we fry them of course! However, did you know that you can grill them instead? All you need to do is slice them in half and place them on the grill for a minute. Spread some butter to aid the process and sweeten it. These donuts will not only taste better but will be healthier.

3. Bacon

To reduce the amount of fat you eat, grill bacon instead of frying it in a pan (Photo: Shutterstock)

Yes, bacon can be grilled and it will be tastier than its pan-fried sister. The fats in the bacon combined with the smoky flavour and charred bits from grilling will give your bacon flavour that is out of this world. Additionally, the fat simply melts off the bacon and doesn’t accumulate like it would if you fried it in a pan. This is beneficial for those on a weight-loss journey. Ensure you turn it within the first few minutes to prevent it from burning.

4. Meatballs

This is one of the best ways to cook minced meat since the spices that are added to the meat give it some much needed flavour. Instead of deep frying your meatballs, put them on the grill. You can put them in skewers to make turning them faster and prevent them from rolling around. This will cook the meatballs with little to no oil and give them that grilled flavour.

5. Fish

Oh yes, grilled fish is our new best friend! It’s not only tantalizing to our taste buds but it is healthier than eating red meat. Grilling fish ensures that its natural juices are preserved making your fish moist and flaky. This cooking method also gives the fish added flavour. Marinate your fish with lemon, salt, black pepper and a few cubes of butter (or margarine) a few hours before you need to grill it and then wrap it in banana leaves or foil and let it cook in the grill until it is done.

Grilled food is great as it allows you to watch your weight and still indulge in tasty food. Whether vegan or not, give grilled food a try.
