When you’re single, all the romance surrounding Valentine’s Day can make you gag. It doesn’t matter if you’re single by choice or circumstance, this day can be difficult if you’re self-partnered.

However, Valentine’s Day is meant to be about celebrate love, in all forms. Being single doesn’t exempt you from marking the day. This month on Eve, we’re focusing on self-love and, even though this is a habit you should practice all year round, it doesn’t hurt to pay extra attention to yourself on this day.

Below are ways you can celebrate Valentine’s Day when you’re single, without the bitter and alone subtext.

1. Take yourself on a staycation

Everybody deserves a break from the hustle and bustle of daily life. A staycation is a holiday that you take around your area of residence. Book a nice hotel or Airbnb and treat yourself to some much needed me-time.

2. A spa day

Splurge on yourself with a pamper session at a spa. Have a facial, mani-pedi and massage to loosen those tense muscles.

If you prefer something budget-friendly, have a spa day at home. Do your nails, take a nice long shower, eat chocolate and drink wine as you watch your favourite shows.

3. Have a galentine’s day

Galentine’s is the bestie version of Valentine’s. Celebrate the day with a good friend or two. Buy each other gifts, go on a nice dinner or spend it indoors if the sight of lovey-dovey couples makes you cringe.

4. Treat yourself to a nice gift

I have a running list of jewellery, clothes and accessories that I want to buy, as do many women. What better day than Valentine’s to treat yourself to any of these items? Take the time to go out and buy it or order it online. Enjoy the experience of unwrapping it and taking it out on its first ride. Remember you can also buy yourself some lingerie. For who, you might ask? For yourself. You deserve nice things too.

5.  Remind yourself of how awesome you are

It can be difficult remembering what an amazing person you are what with all the toxicity in the world. As we focus self-love this month, write down all the things you love about yourself and put them in a prominent place, where you can look at them often.
