Home decorating, just like fashion, has trends that die and then get reincarnated several years later. Some decor trends take longer to come back en vogue than others. Think about bell-bottom trousers, big afros and tucked in shirts; it is the same concept with home décor. While we do not advocate buying all new stuff year in and year out, we want your space to still feel stylish and up to date.
Doillies
Doillies are also known locally as vitambaa. The crochet our mothers and grandmothers decorated even the television with. You do not need to lay out doillies all over your furniture. If you inherited some beautiful ones, quilt them together to make a throw blanket for your couch. You can also turn them into pillow covers to give you a modern look with a sentimental touch.
Plastic plants
These belong where plastic bags belong — away from your home. Plastic plants may be maintenance free but they make your home look cheap. Did you know you could get a real plant for as little as Sh30? Replace faux plants with jars of indoor plants or potted herbs.
Matchy-matchy rooms
Did you know a lot of mix and matching gives your room a cluttered look? If you already have matching furniture, carpets, curtains and décor, swap things around your rooms. Edit your home collection and sell off the extra matchy items that you do not need. Your space will look more cohesive and minimalist with just a few well-coordinated pieces.
Bulky curtains
Bulky curtains are also out. Give your window a lighter look by going easy with the window treatments. The pelmets, sashes, valances and additional draping make a window area look stuffy and limit the amount of light flowing into the room.
