It is impossible to talk about education in Kenya and not talk about Eddah Gachukia and her husband Daniel Gachukia.

Proprietors and directors of the Riara Group of Schools and the Riara University, this couple is an educational powerhouse. The two share a long-standing love story, having met at the Nairobi Railway Station in 1953 as they both headed to Makerere University.

Born July 13, 1936, Eddah Wacheke took education very seriously with the help and encouragement of her late father. An alumnus of various reputable institutions such as Alliance Girls, Makerere University, Nairobi University and Leeds University, Eddah excelled in her career as an educationalist. Her passion for education led her to found F.A.W.E (Foundation for African Women Educationalists) in 1993.

Eddah's outstanding career as an educationalist saw her receive an honorary degree from Kenyatta University in 2008 right next to Jakaya Kikwete, be awarded by The International Committee of the Fellowship of the Least Coin for her exemplary contribution to education in Kenya in 2009 and she is also a holder of the coveted Moran of the Burning Spear presidential award.

She has under her belt a political stint as nominated member of parliament and has sat and continues to sit in boards such as Uchumi Supermarkets, Kenya Airways and the Nation Media Group. Talk of an exemplary fulfilling career!

A mother of four, her children have excelled in their own respective fields, Suzanne Opembe (formerly Suzanne Kibukosya) is a renowned Afro-jazz musician. Her grandson Marcus Kibukosya is a member of the famous young hip hop group Camp Mulla.

Eddah at 81 and her husband continue to run the Riara Group of Schools. Maintaining a family business has taken prayer and dedication Eddah says. Age has nothing on this woman
