How beer can help your hair

Did you know that beer is actually good for you – well, at least for your hair? This frothy drink is great for hair because it has a low pH, which tightens hair follicles, while removing dirt and grease from the hair.

Thus if you love indulging in a cold beer on a Friday evening, now you have one more reason to grab an extra one.

One advantage of beer is that it induces hair growth. It is safe, easy to use, and has no side effects. It also clarifies and adds volume to the hair.

Researchers say that beer has a natural ingredient known as silica that is known to add volume to make hair thicker. Beer also has nutrients that include phosphorus, copper, magnesium, iron and vitamin B. These help keep hair healthy and shinier. Beer also contains biotin, which prevents hair loss and dandruff and maltose, which strengthens the hair. The vitamin C contained in beer brings natural shine in the hair.

There is really no particular way in which beer can be used on hair but these ideas could benefit you:

Shampoo: You can shampoo your hair using beer since the proteins it contains will repair damaged hair making it thick and glossy. For hair that is stronger, mix a cup of beer and half a cup of shampoo, store it in a bottle and use it to wash your hair as usual. This natural hair conditioner smooths your hair and makes it stronger.

Conditioner: You can also add beer to your conditioner to soften your follicles further and achieve maximum shine. It also helps in getting rid of split ends. Beer has ingredients that leave your hair well hydrated. Mix a cup of beer with one teaspoon of jojoba oil. Ensure the liquid also reaches your scalp. Cover your hair with a towel for 30-45 minutes and then wash off the smell of beer by rinsing the hair with plain water. The beer will add volume while the oil adds shine. Another way to condition your hair with beer is to get a beer and leave the bottle open overnight so that the beer is flat, heat it for a minute the next day and then add two teaspoons of honey and a teaspoon of lemon. Apply the mixture on your hair and leave for 20 minutes before rinsing as usual.

Clarifying rinse: For glossier and stronger hair, especially if it is damaged, a beer rinse is the answer. Mix 30ml of water, two teaspoons of cider vinegar, 30ml flat beer and five drops rosemary oil. (The thicker your hair the more the amounts of potion).

Rub the solution through your hair after shampooing; this removes build-up from hair products. Your hair will be left smooth, bouncy and silky and your fingers will easily run through it.

Instead of drinking beer and adding fat to your body, use it on your hair to add shine and volume.
