How to add colour to your kitchen

No matter how dated your kitchen is, it is as good as dull if it does not pop your senses. While white is a nice colour, your kitchen would appreciate splashes of colour. Not everyone is comfortable with bold colour though. Once in a while, however, our senses die to be shaken.

Here are some clever ways to add a burst of colour to your kitchen.

Paint: If you own your home or landlord will let you, paint the entire kitchen. In the past, people would paint the kitchen one colour but you can try multiple colours for your walls for a spanking new look and feel.

Cabinets: If you live in a rental, it may be cheaper to paint the cabinets a colour that you fancy. To make it even more interesting, add new hardware such as handles to your cabinets. If your cabinets are white, paint the inside of one or two of them in different colour so that whenever you open the cabinet door, a surprise awaits you. How about painting the ceiling beam to match a red wall clock? This will make the white ceiling stand out.

Canisters: Where do you store your salt, sugar, pepper etc? A fabulous way to add colour to your kitchen is using vases, pitchers, salt and pepper shakers, dishes, mugs and other serve ware items. Fortunately they are available in varying interesting colours. Choose colours that blend with your kitchen.

Fruit basket: Displaying fruits like bananas, tomatoes, apples, oranges and grapes will be a natural addition of colour to your kitchen counter. Use a stainless steel or clear glass bowl to display the fruits in a central location.

Appliances: When placed on kitchen counter tops, appliances can make a colour statement. A red toaster or coffee maker, lime green electric kettle or an orange fryer will do the magic.

Walls: Hang colourful plates on your kitchen wall to serve as artwork. Be creative and hang them in different patterns. Apart from plates, you can also hang some paintings or portraits; ensure, however, that they thematically balance with your kitchen look.

Curtains, towels and rugs: These too, can give your kitchen a pop. Put aside what you already had and buy some in complementary colours. This is a fun alternative to the normal and boring look.

Tiles: This works better if the house is yours. Add some colourful tiles around the sink area in interesting patterns, sizes and shapes.

Dishes: If you have open cabinets, your dishes can serve as colour centerpieces. Choose colours that will ensure you achieve an uncluttered, clean look.
