When it comes to keeping our bodies clean, we have a myriad of options. From body washes and shower gels, liquid soaps, to soap bars, body scrubs, and shower creams. Have you ever wondered what the difference is and if one is more effective than the other? After all, the aim is to remove dirt. Shower gel – This is a liquid soap that has a firmer gel-like consistency than body washes. Liquid soaps may contain moisturisers and fragrances. Body wash – Another type of liquid soap that has a lighter consistency than a shower gel. It is good for people with normal skin. A moisturising body wash is best for those with dry skin. Shower cream – This is a liquid soap, which is more moisturising than shower gel or body wash. Soap bars – These are the traditional soaps that have been available for centuries. They are cheaper and tend to have a higher PH, therefore most of them are harsher than liquid soaps. Here are some tips when determining which one to use. 1. Skin type. Choosing the best cleanser for your body depends on your preference and on your skin type. Most soaps remove dirt and your body’s natural oils. If you have dry skin, look for products that state that they are moisturising. 2. Lather. Liquid soaps tend to create a richer lather than bar soaps, and many people prefer this. However, more foam does not mean that you are cleaner. There are some non-soap cleansers that do not foam but are just as effective. The upside is that these cleansers leave more of your natural oils behind and is therefore less drying. 3. Check the ingredients. If you have dry or sensitive skin, avoid products with lye as these are extremely harsh on the skin. If you are using a bar soap, it is better to choose a beauty bar which tends to be more moisturising than regular soaps. The best body cleanser for you: The decision to use a liquid or bar soap is a personal choice. You also need to be aware of how you react to certain additives and fragrances. Use warm rather than hot water when bathing. Use a moisturiser immediately you dry off. Do not over-cleanse as this can lead to dryness. photo:simplyenhle.com
