Stop that receding hairline

Living

Because of the many hair trends today, many women are living on the edge. Each one wants hot braids, weaves, hair colour, chemicals, treatment and even high buns. Unfortunately, some of them end up suffering from receding or thinning hair line. Fortunately, depending on the status of your hairline, one can get their lush full edges back. If your hairline feels smooth, similar to the shiny scar tissue that grows back after you hurt your elbow, it may never grow back. Hair is very important to every woman and its loss causes stress. The thinning hairline is not cute and interferes with one's self esteem. Some women will isolate themselves, lose confidence or suffer from emotional issues. In some extreme cases, it can lead to depression. Others will simply hide the thinning hairline using wigs, hats or headscarfs. International supermodel Naomi Campbell, suffered the same and had to walk around without her hairline. Other than genetics, hormonal changes as a result of pregnancy or certain medication, and ageing, receding hairline can be caused by many other factors. Receding/thinning hairline scientifically known as frontal fibrosing alopecia is a condition where a woman's hair line recedes. Most of the time, it affects the entire scalp. This condition causes your hairline to thin to a point where your follicles cease growing hair. So how do you stop your hairline from receding? If you have some hair left around the edges of your hairline, there could be some hope. Here is how: • Stop wearing tight hairdos such as braid, weaves or ponytails that pull your eyes back. The word tight should never be part of your hairstyling vocabulary. If your hairline is thinning, only wear a wig if you have to like to work or when you have to be in a public place where you want to appear presentable. Throw out that wig when you get home to allow your hair to breath. • Stop applying chemicals on your already damaged hairline. Each one of us would love to have a new hairdo every week like Kim Kardashian. What we don't realize is that whenever a celebrity changes their hair, it is often not theirs, it's a weave. Apart from that, they have professional hairdressers who take care of their natural hair. If you want to straighten your hair, you could moderately flat iron, gently blow dry, wrap it or wet set. You can consider natural hairstyles to give your hair a chemical break. • Scalp massaging will give your hair follicles a very deserved TLC. Massage your hair using the scalp of your fingers and move gently in a circular pattern. Do this for about 10 minutes every day. Use healthy (natural) products for the massage, ensuring that you avoid any that will clog the pores. Try coconut, almond or castor oils for the massage since they are lighter. • In consultation with your doctor, you could take some supplements or vitamins but in moderation. Even as you take them, remember your hairline regrowth will not be instant, something that some supplements advertise. A healthy diet made up of fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, whole grains and plenty of water will also help. Your doctor can also subscribe medication that you can either apply or swallow to remedy the problem. • Stop brushing your hair heavily especially when using brushes that have tough bristles. This tends to rip out your hair and thin the edges. Buy a soft bristled brush to use on your hair. • I have seen many women who apply gel to flatten their baby hair on the hairline. Once in a while is okay, but if you make it a habit, start saying goodbye to your hairline. Some of the gels that promise to leave those edges laid contain a lot of alcohol, which has a damaging and drying effect to the hair. So if you must use gel, go for one that has a little alcohol. • I know of women who tong or flat iron their hair every morning. This is a recipe for thinning hairline. Minimise the use of heated appliances. • Wash your hair using a fortifying shampoo at least thrice a week. Massage the shampoo into your hair and let it stay on for a few minutes before you rinse it off. For now, your hairline is thinning and you want to hide it: • Always let your hair fall on your face when you comb it. Avoid hairstyles that pull your hair back as this emphasizes the look you are avoiding. • A blunt or straight bang would be ideal to hide the thinning hairline. You can also try side swept bangs since they too can hide the hairline. • Research shows that weaving the hair to hide the hairline only worsens the condition. Go, instead, for human hair wigs that can be washed and set. • Go for a short hair cut so that the contract between your receding hairline and the rest of your hair is reduced.
