Perfect colour blocking for your home

Living

Colour blocking is the art of combining two or more colours without pattern — you use contrasting blocks of colour. It is a great way to bring pops of unexpected colour into any scheme. To integrate this trend in your home décor, start small by introducing one focal wall as an accent wall or furniture piece, adding little by little. Try out unconventional mixes, those that seem unmatchable — the more surprising the colour combination, the better.  When used well, this trend will give your home a refreshing look and add an energetic feel.

If you do not want to colour block a whole room, try it on a smaller scale by incorporating it into your décor pieces. The look can be customised to any taste.

PULLING OFF THE TREND:

Choose your shades – A colour chart is a good guide in choosing colours. The colours opposite each other on the colour wheel are always a good match. As you do this, consider the colours of non-moveable elements like the floor that can’t be changed easily; take its colour into consideration. Stick to primary colours like red, blue and yellow, or secondary colours like orange, purple and  green . You could opt for softer shades if that is too loud.  For best results, stick to two or three bold colours to maximise the impact of each one.

Brighten up – The bolder the colour, the bigger the statement. Think for example of a bold blue, matched with lime green.  If you are colour shy, colour block with neutrals. You could do black and white then add a block of bright colour like red.

Accessorise – Once you have picked your colours, accessorise your home with throw pillows, knick-knacks and wall decorations among other things in the bold colours. Throw cushions and throw blankets will bring everything together. Colour blocked or bold striped throw pillows are also readily available. You could also have them made.

Surprise: To achieve a successful colour blocking effect, keep your colours separate. How about a purple sofa with green throw cushions and an orange carpet!

Subtle look: For those who love it soft, keep your walls and floors neutral and introduce colour in your furniture and accessories.
