Keeping your weave fresh & stylish

Living

Despite most of our men not loving weaves on their women, it seems weaves are here to stay, at least for now. Many women love them because they add thickness and length to their hair. So how do you keep them in tiptop shape for a long period?

•Your hairdresser should be able to advice you on the kind of brush to use; this will ensure the hair does not tangle unnecessarily. A hairbrush with soft, natural bristles will best serve this purpose.

•Separate the hair strands around the bonds of the weave on a regular basis. Use your fingers gently to keep your extensions in good condition.

•When going to bed, loosely tie your hair at the back to minimise tangles and knots.

•For those who go to the gym, ensure you make a matuta of your  weave to keep it protected and out of the way.

•Use a gentle shampoo when you wash your weave. Work through your hair without rubbing excessively or pulling on the weave. Once your hair is wet, squeeze the strands gently to get out extra moisture, then pat it gently with a towel.

•When styling your weave into an updo, be careful since there is a tendency of it pulling your hair causing damage.

•Never use heated styling tools like curling irons on your weave unless you are sure of its quality; otherwise, you risk melting it away. If it is real human hair, use moderate heat setting on the styling tools and always apply heat protection product on the weave before styling.

•Visit your hairdresser at least every six weeks. Weaves too, need TLC and should thus, be trimmed professionally, washed and styled regularly.

•Always use a swimming cap if you have to take a dip. Your weave is also prone to chlorine damage.

•Keep your weave in healthy condition through regular treatment and always use a moisturising conditioner.

•Avoid playing with your hair since constant tagging and twirling can loosen the extensions.
