Hair accessories to avoid

Living

When you accessorise your hair, it offers an instant boost to your hair, wardrobe or mood. Accessories can also be used to secure unruly fringes or related strands.

Carefully selecting your hair accessories will instantly alter your hairstyle, by glamming it up.

Some hair accessories will, however, do more harm than good to your hair. You must endeavour to avoid them for the sake of your hair’s health and safety.

Hair chains: These look dramatic and stunning, especially on some of the international celebrities we see on reality TV.

They are, however, not good for your hair since they consist of actual chains. A chain is a series of connected links typically made of metal.

They are usually held in place with either an invisible elastic band or two small plastic or metal side combs, which anchor it to the head.

The unfortunate thing is that the link chains may snag, pull, tear and rip weak hair that has delicate roots. This could also create split ends, leading to hair loss. If you must wear hair chains, do so on weaves, as the damage won’t be as bad.

Elastic bands: Unless it is covered, avoid elastic bands. You may be tempted to grab a rubber band and use it to pull your hair up and off your neck, but you will be courting disaster.

Traditional rubber bands are actually the worst type of hair accessory you can subject your hair to. They may cause tangles, snagging, ripping and pulling; save them for securing your old bills and paperwork.

Hairpins with exposed metal ends: Most hairpins have ends coated with plastic or similar coverings. Constant use may sometimes, however, cause the coating on the ends to wear off or detach. When this happens, throw it away.

The exposed metal ends may scratch delicate scalps and cause tangling, snagging or ripping of hair. Hair pins are relatively cheap thus it is advisable that you keep extra on hand for use whenever the one you have is worn out.

Hair turbans: These are high fashion hair accessories that pop up periodically on fashion runways and red carpets. However, only a few can wear them and look fabulous.

They maximise existing facial flaws ranging from soft chin lines, wrinkles and facials folds. They can also add unwanted width or weight to some face types and shapes. If you have pronounced features such as an endowed nose, chin, or forehead, avoid the turban.
