The many ways to use petroleum jelly

Living

This cheap beauty must-have is affordable and very useful. Here are 14 top beauty uses of Vaseline:

Protective barrier cream: When colouring hair or applying chemical treatments, petroleum jelly will protect your skin. It is a long-standing favourite with mountain climbers, hikers and winter dwellers for its powerful anti-chapping effect and protection from the chilly winds.

Pucker up:  Petroleum jelly will soften, moisturise and smooth lips. Use before brushing your teeth and prior to sleeping for permanently kissable lips.

Lipstick salvage: Resuscitate your favourite old lipsticks and turn them into slick new glosses by mixing melted remnants with petroleum jelly.

Lip exfoliator: Put on some petroleum jelly and lightly brush with a toothbrush. Use a soft child’s toothbrush to scrub gently.

Easy eye cream: Coat eyelids and under-eye area with a layer of petroleum jelly before bed. This protects the delicate skin around the eyes.

Emergency brow gel: Tame unruly eyebrows by applying a thin layer of petroleum jelly and lightly comb into place.

Cuticle softener: Regularly dab petroleum jelly onto your fingernails to keep them resilient and cuticles soft.

Modern manicure: A little petroleum jelly around the base of your nail will stop nail polish from getting onto your skin during application.

Overnight hand treatment: Apply petroleum jelly to your hands, and wear cotton gloves. In the morning you will have baby-smooth hands.

Foot rescue: Apply petroleum jelly on your feet before retiring. Put on socks and wear overnight for super smooth feet and toes.

Perfume saver: Rub a little petroleum jelly to pulse points before applying expensive perfume to make the fragrance last longer.

Heavy duty anti-chapping cream: Use petroleum jelly as a body moisturiser on extra dry patches of your body — elbows, knees or heels.

After shave balm: Petroleum jelly is soothing and moisturising to freshly shaven skin, where ordinary lotion can be irritating.

Eye make-up remover: Smear petroleum jelly onto lids and leave to sit for several minutes. Gently wipe off with warm wet cotton wool. Especially useful for concentrated colour like kohl, mascara, liquid or gel liners and heavy shimmery eye shadows. The rest will easily come off with your regular cleanser.
