Kendi: I'm my own woman

Living

Describe the kind of a woman that you are.

An independent one. I am not self-centered; I am the kind of a woman who people can stand being around.

What are you working on?

I plan to release my single Chali Yangu soon, the video has already been shot. I have also recorded many songs which will be out with time.

What beauty tips do you live by?

I never sleep with my make-up on. Also, ladies should understand that what works for somebody else’s skin might not work on hers.

What is the one incident that almost tore you apart?

When the people I trusted and grew up with spread lies about me that I was sleeping with every media guy and that I had had several abortions. When someone starts a rumour about you, it is not as hurtful as when close friends do that. I was also extremely sad when an eight-year-old girl from an orphanage who has begging me to live with me was raped.

People say that women are their own worst enemies. What are your thoughts?

It is true. Guys get over their envy quickly when one of their friends succeeds in life. For women, some friends say they want the best for you and when you actually get it, they now wish the worst for you. I also don’t understand why women are afraid of having a fellow woman reach where she is. There is enough space for all.

On the recently signed Marriage Bill, what will you do if your man brings a second wife home without consulting you?

I will walk out with my stuff as soon as he walks inside the house with her.

Is there any special someone in your life?

Yes, we have been dating for two years now. He is humble, very much behind-the-scene type of guy and we understand each other.

What inspires you?

God, my family and myself. My family has been at my side every step of the way and when I am stressed, my father travels all the way from Meru just to tell me that things will be okay when he has no idea how that would be. They constantly call to know how I have been and that makes me forget what I might be going through. I made a decision too to live my life for me despite rumours.

What are your plans for the next five years?

I want to have a family, have not more than two children and get my music to a higher level.

What advice would you give to fellow women?

Be your own woman, you should never depend on a guy. Work for your own money, it is the best way to go.
