Essential tips to apply while cleaning down there

Lady Speak

Keeping the vagina clean is one of the most important things every woman should do! To keep your ‘little girl’ fresh, there are ways you can naturally clean so as to avoid harming it because it is the most delicate part in your body.

Whether you’re experiencing an odor, excessive discharge or even an itch, talking about your vagina happens to be a very sensitive subject. But we have to talk about hygiene because according to statistics most women do it wrongly. It is the one thing we still have no idea how it should be done.

Before we tackle natural ways you can use to improve your vaginal health, you need to know this.

How should you wash it?

Despite the knowledge of the vagina being self-cleaning, most women will still be tempted to give it a proper wash. This includes going all the way in with a wash cloth full of soap to scrub an odor away. Bad idea! This disrupts your vaginal pH level which is acidic with a pH between 3.5 and 4.5 resulting in infections such as yeast infections and those very same odors you were ‘trying’ to get rid of.

If you have to use soap, get unscented and sensitive ones and only clean the outside of the vagina, never the inside.

Is water alone enough?

Yes! It is the best cleanser. Wash the vulva and do not fill your vagina with water. Cleaning the outside is enough.

What about excessive discharge?

Vaginal discharge is normal. It is a mucus produced from the cervix and depending on whether you’re pregnant, hitting menopause or about to get your periods, the amount produced varies. Unless it is discolored with a foul smell accompanied with itching, seek medical help.

Is douching a good idea?

Definitely not! Flushing water up the vagina is a recipe for infections as it disrupts normal vaginal bacteria.

Is using scented wipes and vaginal deodorants a good idea?

This is another resounding no! Forget the marketing gimmicks to get you into buying vaginal products. According to Professor Ronnie Lamont, spokesperson for the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, if nature had intended the vagina to smell like roses or lavender, it would have made the vagina to smell like roses or lavender.

That said, maintaining a healthy diet and exercise play a huge role. For instance, walking and running helps the pelvic floor to tone up and ensure good general health. Wearing cotton underwear that isn’t too tight and sleeping commando gives your vagina time to breathe.

If you want go a step further and keep your lady parts in mint condition, below are natural methods you can adopt. It should be noted that this is not medically proven and results vary from person to person.

Lemon leaves

They contain a compound called limonene which is an antibiotic and an anti-allergic agent that can cleanse and keep your vagina smelling sweet. They also help to maintain the vagina’s pH.

Apple cider vinegar

It is good for cleansing your vagina. Add few drops of ACV with equal amounts of water then clean the area. Leave for 15minutes then rinse with water. It helps restore the acidic quality of the vaginal wall.

Chamomile oil

To get rid of vaginal odor, add one drop to two cups of water and then wash.

Baking soda

Add half a cup of baking soda into your bath tub. Soak yourself in the water for at least 20 minutes or more. It naturally balances the pH level in your body, thus helps to reduce any odor.

White vinegar

It is a natural vaginal wash. Take ½ a cup of vinegar and add it to your bath water for some relief.

Fenugreek seeds

Very beneficial, not only does it cleanse your vagina but also improves your immune system. Soak the seeds overnight then use the water to wash.
