Najma Ismail, the Standard Group’s External Affairs/Editorial Liaison Manager, has been appointed as a board member of the Tourism Regulatory Authority.

This comes after Tourism and Wildlife Cabinet Secretary Najib Balala revoked the appointment of Pauline Njoroge following a series of social media posts, and appointed Ismail as her replacement.

“I am revoking Pauline Njoroge’s appointment as a board member of Tourism Regulatory Authority because we have just seen what she has tweeted in the past that Nairobi National Park was useless,” CS Balala said in a press statement.

In a post shared on her Facebook, Njoroge downplayed the importance of Nairobi National Park stating that it’s only call to fame was that it was the only park located in a city.

“It does not make sense that in a congested city like Nairobi we can afford to have acres and acres of land in the name of a park,” she said.

It was netizens who brought Njoroge’s posts to the attention of the ministry following her appointment. Njoroge’s tenure was slated for three years starting Friday, August 7 2020.

“We do not want to be associated with such people and such thinking,” the CS continued.

In the statement, the ministry reiterated its commitment to saving the national park and ‘any protected area which is the habitat of our national heritage: wildlife’.
