KTN journalist Yvonne Okwara on Tuesday faced Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet in a no-holds-barred-interview and she wasn’t holding anything back!

On the issue of the overall security preparations on covering the repeat presidential elections, IG Boinnet noted that they have assembled all personnel, assets based on various threat levels to public safety.

Boinnet assured Kenyans that they are well set and ready to support IEBC discharge its mandate regarding the upcoming election.

Other measures put in place include the deployment of enough police officers across the country.

Changes in Police Force

Boinnet candidly pointed out that there was transformation in the hitherto Administration Police Force.

Tremendous efforts in changing software and organization had also been implemented accordingly

Strategy in managing protesters

The Inspector General said the Public Order Act regulates how demonstrations should be conducted, hence the guiding principle is always doing things according to the law

The police are evaluating findings of the investigations with a view of establishing whether to proceed with dealing with police officers if indeed they were at fault.

CS Fred Matiang’i chinkororo remarks

Yvonne Okwara asked whether IG Boinnet would interrogate CS Fred Matiang’i regarding the remarks he made in vernacular.

Boinnet said he did not see any violation made by Matiang’I through his comments.

Amnesty International

Amnesty International quoted total number of deaths during Post-Election Violence at 67. Boinnet disputed this, saying he is only aware of 12 deaths

Improvement Strategies

IG Joseph Boinnet listed some of the strategies laid down for the overall improvement of police service. These include:

  1.  Introduction of training curriculum in colleges
  2. Increased number of officers, vehicles hence improved visibility and faster response to crime
  3. Contemporary scientific methods which include the establishment and equipping of National Police Service forensic laboratory
  4. Plan to establish a National Police hospital
  5. Better housing, working environment for police officers
  6. Modernisation of communication systems, occurrence books to conform to the realities of the 21st Century
