60 per cent not tax compliant in Uasin Gishu

Uasin Gishu, Kenya: Uasin Gishu County has announced that over 60 per cent of locals have been evading taxes for the past one year.
The worrying number in a region where most people focus on farming and businesses has hampered equitable provision of services in the region.
Speaking during the launch of county revenue education and compliance month, Uasin Gishu deputy governor Daniel Chemno said it is appropriate for the locals to remit their taxes on time in order to boost services and improve livelihoods.
"As we embark on the sensitisation month which ends on March 31, we will need the public to access the necessary education and understand that tax payment is a duty and not a luxury," he said.
Chemno noted that only services and goods spelt under the passed Finance Bill will be taxed.
He further took issue with a section of business owners and tradesmen from Eldoret who castigated the county for surcharging fees for permits and rates.
