Celebrated author Ngugi wa Thiong'o (pictured) has challenged the Government to make mandatory the use of local languages books in the country's educational syllabus.

Prof Ngugi, who termed people who have mastered foreign languages but do not know their local languages as 'mental slaves', said the inclusion of indigenous languages in schools would improve the quality of education.

Ngugi was speaking yesterday during the launch of competence-based curriculum books written in Dholuo, by East African Educational Publishers (EAEP) at Maseno University.

EAEP chief executive officer Kamau Kiarie said the books would be published in five batches.
