The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has accredited a new privately-owned institution to train boda boda riders on road safety.

The Motorcycle Road Safety Training Institute is set for its first intake next month following certification a month ago.

Registered in 2014, the business previously operated as a limited company but now has a fully-fledged curriculum that has been approved by NTSA.

The institute’s director Kimani wa Nduthi, who has officially assumed the moniker Nduthi in line with his work, said prior to getting the NTSA accreditation, he had trained 5,000 boda boda riders.

He is planning to scale up the number. He said all systems were in place and they had already started recruiting new students.

“Besides training students on road safety, which is our core mandate, we will also train them on first aid and public relations so as to be able to handle their customers in a professional manner,” he said in an interview.

Intensified road safety campaigns by different stakeholders have helped reduce boda boda crashes in the country significantly.
