Students from Kikambala face terror charges

Five people were Thursday charged with recruiting students into the Al-Shabaab terror group.

The five - two teachers and three students from Majills El-Maarif El-Islamiya in Kikambala - are accused of propagating radical and extremist teachings with the aim of recruiting learners into the terror group.

The teachers identified as Yahya Salim Bakari and Ismael Muzammil alias Jabal were accused of trying to radicalise a student who has since been placed under witness protection.

The three students were accused of recruiting fellow students into the extremist group.

Appearing before Senior Principal Magistrate Diana Mochache, the five denied the charges, claiming they were framed.

Ms Mochache released the five on a Sh3 million bond each with a similar surety and directed the prosecution to have the case dealt with quickly.

"This is a sensitive matter that should be given priority. The prosecution should provide all the witness statements before we start," said Mochache.

The prosecutor opposed the bond, saying the suspects were a threat to the witnesses.
