Recording studios or recording labels. What does Kenya have?

Picture this. An aspiring artist walks into a recording label in Nairobi to try his hand in music. He is very hopeful and enthusiastic because he believes the label will invest in his talent. Once in the studio of the label, he meets the producer. They challenge him to do some freestyle which he does impressing them. Then the bombshell is dropped. You need to have Sh. 15,000 to record a song with us!

This is a typical scenario that a typical upcoming artist experiences. However talented an artist is, their dreams are shuttered at the door step because of Sh. 15,000 that they cannot afford. This brings up the question; is it that a recording label cannot afford Sh. 15,000? What is Kenyan music industry made of? Recording studios or recording labels?
