200 arrested in police swoops after killing of senior police officer in Nairobi

Nairobi, Kenya: More than 200 people were Monday night arrested in police swoops in Buruburu, Umoja and Donholm areas following the killing of a senior police officer earlier in the day.

The operation also covered Kayole and nearby areas and police say they are looking for the gang behind the killing of the officer.

It is not clear if the swoops got the targeted suspected killers of Inspector Zadock Kamala, whose body was found in a pool of blood next to residential apartments, minutes after being shot by unknown assailants.

Police say they are looking for a criminal gang that has been terrorising residents of Umoja and Kayole.

"We have been collecting bodies in the past weeks and we can link them to these criminals," said a senior officer aware of the operations.

The attackers are believed to have robbed the slain officer of unknown amount of money and a laptop.

Police say the attackers ambushed him at about 6 am on Monday as he headed for his place of work in Dagoretti, prompting a struggle that left him with a bullet wound in the neck.

Buruburu OCPD Charles Kerich said Kamala tried to run towards an AP camp after the shooting but tripped and fell into a trench where his body was found.
