Minority leader calls for 'thorough' review of varsity loans scheme

TAITA TAVETA COUNTY: Education stakeholders have called for a thorough review of university loans awarded to students by the county government.

They said the loans had no impact on the beneficiaries hence the need for a review upwards.

The leaders, among them the Education officer for Njiri sub-county in Nairobi County, Simon Siwili, and Taita Taveta assembly Minority Leader Ronald Sagurani, said the loans were not enough to cater for the rising needs of poor students.

"There is a hue and cry all over the region as some students were being awarded a paltry Sh5,000. Some of them owe the universities over Sh70,000 in fees arrears and it will soon be impossible for them to continue with their education," said Mr Sagurani.

TARGET GROUP

Speaking at a prize-giving ceremony at Mahoo Primary School in Taveta sub-county on Monday, Sagurani said the county needed to be realistic even as it seeks to benefit as many as possible.

"How do you expect a poor student to complete their university education with Sh5,000? This is unreasonable and should be rectified to ensure that poor students continue their education without interruption," said Sagurani who is also the Mahoo ward representative.

Mr Siwili, who comes from the region, said the loans project was welcome but the county administration should ensure it is sustainable.

"The programme is good but the county government should ensure that it effectively benefits the target group," he said.
