Migori braces itself for First Lady's visit

Migori Governor Okoth Obado has warned politicians who incite youths to cause mayhem during public functions, ahead of First Lady Margaret Kenyatta’s visit to the county.

Speaking at an event organised by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) in Migori town, Obado said the First Lady will visit Migori on November 5 to initiate several development projects.

“We shall be hosting the First Lady Kenyatta in Migori on November 5. She is coming to donate a mobile clinic which will help expectant mothers. Her visit is a good thing for the county,” said Obado.

Obado said some leaders from Migori County have painted the region in bad light following the unfortunate incident in September where rowdy youths disrupted President Uhuru Kenyatta’s visit.

“We concluded elections, the best thing now is to move on. We need to work together with the leadership that was put in place by the people. Causing chaos will not help us,” he said.

He stressed that his county government is not afraid of criticism that is done in a positive way.

“The amount that comes to the county government is only 15 per cent, the rest is from the National Government. Therefore, we have to work with them to deliver better services to our people,” he said.

Obado defended himself against claims that his government misappropriated Sh150 million in purchasing vehicles, saying the vehicles are helping the county staff in accessing remote areas of the county.

Reports released by the EACC indicated that in 2012, Migori Municipal was the sixth most corrupt municipality. Obado however downplayed the reports saying the county government had proper mechanisms of fighting corruption.
