Joshua Waiganjo moves to prove he was a cop

Nyeri, Kenya: Alleged police imposter Joshua Waiganjo Thursday produced official police correspondence to prove he was a police reservist. He is facing five counts of fraud in a Nyeri court. His lawyer Charles King’ori produced copies of alleged correspondence between senior police officers on Waiganjo, between May 2003 and November 2012.

Waiganjo is accused of defrauding three Othaya families of Sh280,000 by purporting to be a senior police officer with the ability to assist their children join the service. He allegedly extorted money from the families by claiming that there was a “special police recruitment exercise” targeting Othaya, the home turf of then President Mwai Kibaki.

Mr King’ori produced a copy of a letter dated May 29, 2003, signed by former Rift Valley Provincial Police Officer (PPO) Peter Kimanthi showing that Waiganjo had been appointed Assistant Commissioner (ACP) of Police Reservists in charge of the North Rift region.

King’ori, also produced another letter dated November 23, 2012, in which the then West Pokot police boss David Wambua allegedly recommended that Waiganjo be assigned duties by the former Rift Valley PPO John M’Mbijiwe.
