Kwale, Kenya: An MP has promised to supply 22,000 pairs of shoes to all primary school pupils in Lunga Lunga constituency in Kwale County to protect them from jiggers.

Khatib Mwashetani Foundation in partnership with the Red Cross society of Kenya says the initiative has already kicked off.

Speaking Tuesday during the official launching of CDF bursaries at his Lungalunga constituency in Kanana, Khatib Mwashetani who is the area MP said that they are campaigning against jiggers in the area and one important way of fighting it is by distributing shoes to the pupils.

“Most of the pupils were affected by jiggers in this area but since we started the anti-jiggers campaign in schools the menace has reduced,” said Mwashetani.

Mwashetani added that Red Cross Society of Kenya has really helped his constituents in the jiggers’ campaign through offering medicine which has helped the affected residents.

During the launching of the bursary Mwashetani said that the total CDF amount for this financial year was Sh90million and Sh15 million was allocated for bursaries.

According to the breakdown, 80 university students from the constituency will benefit for a Sh2.5 million bursary kitty.

“Another sum of sh1.5million will go to 303 high school students while Sh850,000 set aside for training colleges and Sh240, 000 for students’ computer classes,” said Mwashetani.

Fifty youths are also set to benefit from Sh500, 000 meant for their driving classes while Sh120, 000 will go towards training another 20 youths in motor bike riding.

He at the same time cautioned parents against buying bursary forms.

“No bursary form is sold to anybody and so don’t pay any fee to get one,” he insisted.

He added that anyone who needed a form should get it from the MP’s office instead of making a photocopy from a friend’s.

Mwashetani further added that the CDF kitty has also bought two school buses worth Sh6, 350,000 for Ngozi Girls and St. Joseph Schools.
