Teachers seek MPs support in bid to sack Education CS Jacob Kaimenyi

Saboti Member of Parliament David Lazaro supports the drive by teachers to collect signatures in a bid to recall Education Cabinet Secretary Prof. Jacob Kaimenyi over new ministry directives which they regard oppressive.

Lazaro said the new teachers' guidelines by Kaimenyi are unconstitutional and supported the stand by teachers to oppose the directives.

Speaking at Tuwan Girls' Secondary School in Kitale, Lazaro accused the CS of making personal decisions without consultations, claiming this amounts to abuse of powers.

"The era of issuing roadside orders is gone. Kaimenyi should not abuse his position to undermine teachers," said Lazaro while responding to sentiments by Trans-Nzoia KUPPET secretary Mr. Furaha Lusweti who had asked MPs to protect teachers against intimidation from the CS.

Lazaro said it is against the constitution for government appointees to turn to dictatorial ways in handling duties and coming up with policies without involving relevant institutions and stakeholders.

"Education is critical for the country. It is the key to development and we cannot allow an individual to come up with vested interest to ruin it," he said.

The MP warned Kaimenyi that he is summoning trouble by trampling on the rights of teachers and should rescind unnecessary guidelines that may jeopardize the education sector.

The House committee on education has disowned Kaimenyi's guidelines and termed them unconstitutional.

Lusweti urged lawmakers to defend teachers, saying Kaimenyi's administration is wanting and vowed that the collection of signatures to remove him from office has gained momentum.

"The leadership of the CS is wanting and we are in motion to secure signatures in bid to recall him. He is not taking education to the right direction and teachers are against this," said Lusweti.
