Lecturers in trouble for ignoring court order against strike

By John Muthoni

Kenya: Lecturers found themselves on the receiving end for flouting court orders that barred them from addressing strike issues outside court.

Parties who filed for consent over the return-to-work formula were ordered to file an apology for taking the court casually.

In the orders given by Industrial Court judge Monicah Mbaru, they are to file an apology immediately or risk not getting consent witnessed and signed by Cabinet Secretary for Labour Kazungu Kambi and his Education counterpart Jacob Kaimenyi.

“The dispute is settled between the parties and not with the court. This will not be entertained before this court,” said Justice Mbaru.

In the consent, the university management is to fully implement the Collective Bargaining Agreement as agreed.

In addition, they are to pay staff members in group JG 1 to 15 by May 30. Another clause states that those involved in the strike should not be subjected to any disciplinary action.
