Officials dismiss Knec threat to delete schools

Bomet, Kenya: Officials have dismissed threats by the Kenya National Examination Council (Knec) to delete schools without registration certificates from their database.

Reacting to a circular from Knec to all county directors of education, Bomet County Kenya National Union of Teachers Executive Secretary Malel Langat and Narok South Sub-County Kenya Primary School Heads Association Chairman Stephen Nacola said the move was ill-timed and meant to cause unnecessary nightmares to head teachers and candidates.

“Threat to delete schools from their database is farfetched,” said Langat.

Langat also said Knec should give a one-year notice to schools to comply, warning that it takes a lot of resources to register a school.

“Denying children a chance to sit examinations because the schools are yet to be registered is a violation of their right to education,” he said.

Nacola said it would be difficult for head teachers to meet the registration deadline because the process is always tedious.

“The circular just arrived in our schools. We ask that the council extends the deadline to next year because the registration process involves a lot of bureaucracy and is quite costly,” he said.
