BATTLE OF AMATEURS: Bollo wins Kabete Open as upcoming golfers face off

Royal Nairobi’s Kenneth Bollo carded a round total of 219 gross to emerge the overall winner of the 2016 Kabete Open golf championships at the par 72 Vet Lab course.

Playing off handicap 0, Bollo posted a three over par 75, a two under par 70 and a two over par 74 gross scores in three-round event to claim the trophy.

The two-day championship that ended on Sunday attracted leading amateurs from around the country. It is one of the ongoing 19 Golfer of the Year (GOTY) countrywide series organised by the Kenya Golf Union.

Playing off handicap 0, Robinson Owiti from the home club was the runner-up after posting a total of 225 gross (77, 72, 76) while Geoff Kubwa (+2) of Muthaiga finished second on a score of 229 gross (75, 80, 74).

Jackson Mwangi playing off handicap 3 was the net winner on a round total of 220 nett (74, 74, 72), a stroke ahead of handicap 10 Maina Iraki of Vet Lab, who was the net runner-up. His clubmate, handicap 5 Mutahi Kibuga, was third on a net of 226 (81, 71, 74).

 

GROSS WINNER

Railway’s handicap +1 Alfred Nandwa was the Round One gross winner on 77 gross. Rounds two and three were claimed by clubmates, handicap +1 George Felix and handicap 2 Samuel Njoroge respectively.

John Kamaisi from Nakuru playing off handicap 4 posted 75 nett to claim the Round One prize while Vet Lab's handicap 10 Paul Okoth on 71 nett was the Round Two nett runner-up. Taking Round Three on 74 nett was handicap 3 John Mburu, also from Vet Lab.

Other top 10 gross winners were M. Kibugu (Muthaiga) - 226; Samuel Njoroge (Railways) - 226; L. Magomere (Vet Lab) - 226; J. Kamaisi (Nakuru) - 227; Isiah Otuke (Vet Lab) - 228; Sylvestor Luhombo (Nandi) - 228.

The next championship will be held at Nyanza Club on August 27 and 28, when the amateurs battle for the Nyanza Open.

Other upcoming tournaments include Karen Challenge (Sept 3-4), Tea Fields Trophy in Kericho (Sept 17-18), Sigona Open (Oct), Kenya Amateur Open in Thika (Oct 20-22), Manchester Salver in Eldoret (Nov 5-6), Uhuru Shield at Royal Nairobi (Dec 3-4) and Nyali Open at the Nyali Golf and Country Club (Dec 9-10).
